Senior Motor Underwriter
£30k - £35k & exceptional benefits, Colchester
Due to customer and broker demand, in April 2008 our client launched a superior motor insurance policy to complement their market leading household policy. The Motor product is performing beyond expectations and has a target to grow by 300% in 2009. To continue to grow this product, we require an experienced Motor Underwriter to join the team, based at Colchester office.
The role
You will be a key referral point for Regional Underwriters and will be involved with both broker and underwriter training. You will need to be a strong character and hold the line during tough market conditions and in times of a soft market to ensure we do not deviate from their core underwriting and pricing strategy.
At times you will hold the highest level of authority for this business class and working closely with the Motor Underwriting Manager you will be instrumental in ensuring you build a niche well underwritten, profitable business achieving our premium growth and profit goals.

The position is based in Colchester, however frequent travel to London and throughout the UK will be required. As the role develops, there may be a requirement for travel outside the UK.
Key responsibilities
• Day to day case underwriting of Motor business.
• Assist the Underwriting Manager with the delivery of the key financial metrics (such as closure rates, average premiums, book profiling).
• The consistent communication of underwriting philosophy and criteria to brokers.
• Involvement with product training for both brokers and Hiscox Underwriters.
• Be a key referral point for the scheme business and field Underwriters, maintaining consistency with risk selection and underwriting.
Key requirements
• A minimum of 3 years recent experience of case underwriting of high value vehicles and private vehicle portfolios.
• Existing broker relationships within their niche.
• A logical thinker and a good sense of customer profile building are both imperative.
• Confident, professional manner.
• Excellent communication and relationship building skills.
• Ability to work under in a pressurised environment.
• Understanding the rationale behind our strategy and that the motor market can be very profitable.
